Voluntourism or volunteer travel is a type of travel where people decide to go to a destination and take a week or more to participate in a hands-on experience helping with a project in a community, organization or conservation region. The volunteer experience may fill the entire time that the traveler has set aside to travel; he or she has set an intent to make his vacation a work experience. People engaged in voluntourism definitely get their hands dirty!

Philanthropic travel is a different type of experience, where clients may set aside as little as a day or up to a few days of their trip to engage in a project in a community, organization, or conservation region; most of their vacation is spent relaxing; but they choose to take a portion of that time to participate and assist in a project that benefits others.
